to many happy years

a few weeks ago, my baby sissy got married. it was a beautiful June day with endless sunshine and love. without a doubt my sister was the calmest bride I have ever been around. she moved through the days leading up to her wedding with such grace that it was impressive. it was the first time that I realized my little sister can be one of my role models, and that she has grown into such an incredible, independent woman. even though our life trajectories have differed, she has navigated her path honorably and I am very proud to be her older sister.
my sister and I have never been particularly close, so when she asked me to be her maid of honor, I was really nervous. while I could not recall a lot of stories from when we were younger, I knew I could talk about love and relationships through the great examples that our family and friends have modeled for us.

once I started writing about what I wanted to tell my sister and her husband, the words flowed from my heart. they emulate happiness and it really was my honor to be a part of their day.

Good Evening! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Becca and I am Tori’s proud older sister. I want to start by congratulating the bride and groom, and thank them for allowing me to be a part of their special day. I also want to thank you all for spending the day with us.

When Tori and I were growing up, we used to love making up elaborate adventures for our Barbie dolls to go on, that is when Tori wasn’t drawing all over mine. Our adventures always involved lots of excitement, and they usually ended with a wedding. I guess we’ve always loved a good love story. In addition to a good love story, I’ve always enjoyed the funny stories that my sister is a part of, too. Like the time she cut her own hair and then used Vaseline to try and attach it back to her head before my great uncle’s funeral, the time she clothes-lined herself by running into an electric fence, or all of the times that our cat would wait on the landing of the stairs for her to come around the corner so he could attack her.

Funny stories aside, I think your love story with Sam is the best. I never knew Sam before he dated my sister, so I can’t tell you a lot of stories about him, but I can tell you that I think he is perfect for my sister. I’ve heard that girls tend to look for someone like their father, and I think Tori has done the perfect job. Sam is very laid back, easy to talk to, he has a great sense of humor, and he likes to pick on Tori. So, we are obviously very happy to welcome Sam into our family. I’m excited to have another brother, but I hope Sam is mentally and emotionally prepared to have another sister…

All jokes aside, in all those years that Tori and I played pretend, I never could have come up with a hero more perfect for her than you, Sam. Even though we stopped playing Barbies years ago (and thankfully you’ve stopped drawing on my things…) I know you two will continue having adventures of your own and I wish you a love story that never ends.

My final piece of advice is to never forget why you’re here with each other today, and how far you’ve made it to be here. It’s no longer about your separate pasts, but it is now about your future life together. Embrace, celebrate, and love each other unconditionally.

Let’s raise a glass and cheers: to Tori and Sam, many happy years!
